((Cap'n Jazz)) Band Profile and Upcoming New York City Concerts - Oh My Rockness

Impulsively, I hopped on a last-minute plane to see Cap'n Jazz play a surprise four song set at the Empty Bottle back in January '10. The set was approximately twelve-minutes long and it never crossed my mind whether it was "worth it" or not. Impulses rule sometimes. You can see the video we took of that show HERE.

We've mentioned how epic that night was to, I don't know, pretty much EVERYONE (including all our poor Twitter followers). If you weren't there, and you're a Cap'n Jazz fan, you're in luck (depending on where you live... but hey, that's why they invented planes). The band is playing some shows this summer (July/August 2010) in a few cities across the great U.S. of A.

If you think it will be depressing because their last show before breaking up was something like fifteen years ago and you think they might be all washed up, you're going to be pleasantly surprised. Cap'n Jazz can still BRING it. I was there.

And if you don't know Cap'n Jazz, well, I kind of envy you. I wish I could discover them again; that discovery back when I was in high school was pretty damn magical. I STILL have their one (and only) album on heavy rotation all these years later. Not a single note on that damn thing sounds dated. How did they do it?!

When I first heard Victor's guitars, I had never heard that sound before. And though the band has oft been copied, I still haven't heard someone come close to reproducing the genius of that sound. I didn't even know guitar solos could sound like that.

Of course, there were many, many offshoots from the Cap'n Jazz band tree. Off the top of my head: Joan of Arc, The Promise Ring, Owen, Make Believe, Owls, Ghosts & Vodka, American Football to name a few. But nothing quite matched the punk of that original tree trunk.

Anyway, I've said too much. Go see Cap'n Jazz if you can. And watch the video from that show. It really tells you all you need to know.
